Project 1: Research and discovery

During the Project Based Learning block yesterday 15th Feb. you had to find as many resources and accounts of the journey of Tamatekapua from Hawaiki to Aotearoa.  Don't forget we have the NZ Library books in class and to check the Online Libraries.

Organising my drive:

  1. Set up a folder in your FFL drive and label.  Project 1: My kainga my castle.
  2. Add any resources or images you have found to this folder
  3. Make a reference list of where you have found this information
  4. Be sure to ask whanau about legends and stories passed through the generations about the origins of Maori.

Collating my research:

  1. Create a timeline of events showing the journey from Hawaiki to Aotearoa.
    • Use the information you researched yesterday.
    • It can be made using any method. In your books or digitally from the earliest date you found to the time the Te Arawa waka landed at Maketu.
    • You could use a movie, slideshow, pictogram, written account or any other method to depict the journey.
    • Include key points about the journey such as:
      • why Tamatekapua left, who else made the journey with him, what events happened during the journey, how did they navigate the seas and include any relevant images.

Next Steps: Friday and next PBL Block.

  1. The settlement of Rotorua
    • The journey from Maketu to Rotorua
    • How did Tamatekapua make his way to Rotorua?
    • Why did he decide to settle in Rotorua?
    • European Settlement
    • What major events occurred in the last 200 years?
